Mobile payments – a new way to pay
In 2009, we teamed up with Orange to offer our combined 28 million customers in the United Kingdom an unprecedented range of mobile payment services. This is now a reality and at the end of May 2011, we launched the UK’s first mobile payment service for consumers.
This entirely new, secure and convenient way to make payments is an evolution of how people pay and follows previous payment milestones such as the move from cheques to plastic. Mobile payments will be accepted at stores nationwide including Pret a Manger, EAT., Little Chef, Wembley Arena, Subway, Wilkinson, Boots and McDonalds where contactless payments are currently accepted.
Mobile NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology allows our customers to use their mobile phone to make payments for less than £15 in less than a second, simply by holding their handset over a contactless reader.
